This is the real deal Japanese fare. If you're familiar with Matsuri in Pasadena, this spot is an apple off the same tree.

Great food and menu, from bowls to noodles and salads and rolls. I had the salmon skin salad and will be coming back for more.

Spicy tuna roll was yummy too along with the chicken karage. Love that you can dine in or take out. As Angelenos know the best Japanese restaurants are in strip malls.

This place keeps true to that. Nice little Japanese spot. I had the chicken teriyaki and the chicken was moist and delicious.

Next time I'll try the Japanese curry. Great place to get quality Sushi. Great service, very friendly. Really enjoyed the food.

I ordered the California roll, Spicy Tuna, and the Avocado roll. The rolls were very fresh and great tasting. My fiance went with the Grilled Salmon bowl.

Salmon was cooked to perfection. The quantity of food was more than she could finish. Do yourself a big favor and help support this local business.

I was very excited to try Matsuri bowl, and my opinion after having dinner there is: I loved everything about Matsuri bowl Glancing at the menu, I was so glad to see that there was a new restaurant in the area that served authentic Japanese comfort food.

All of the things you would expect to see was present on the menu: My wife and I ordered 3 things: It ranged from OK to pretty good. The tempura was fresh made.

The rice in the bowls were of high quality. The ingredients were fresh and the meal was tasty--nothing blew us away. Well, except for the tiny portions.

Unfortunately, this feeling of having "overpaid" consumed me throughout my meal. Leaving hungry left a bad taste in my mouth. All in all, I am glad this place opened.

If anything, I always tend to root for small businesses, and I love the idea of being able to get this type of Japanese comfort food in the area.

Best of luck to the owners, and I hope they read these reviews and take customer feedback into consideration. This place is awesome!

Jun is a cool guy and the food is great, never thought I would find a place like this in eagle rock! Try the oyoko don bowl!

If you're looking for authentic Japanese comfort food, this is the place to go. I live close by, so I probably frequent more often than most, but it's right up there with the best casual Japanese spots in Torrance or Sawtelle.

Not sure what's up with all the complaints; if you want nasty food from Yoshinoya or Americanized garbage, go somewhere else.

Chicken combo tastes delicious! Miso soup is also very good, although it's missing some tofu. The mixed tempura is also very good and crunchy.

Lots of flavor in everything. Great food and great service!! I got the salmon teriyaki the sauce on the side and the chef came out to ask if the cut of fish was to my liking- very surprising especially for a hole in the wall place like this.

The salmon was cooked perfectly. Note that because the food is fresh and made to order it takes a little bit more time than your typical teriyaki place.

I talked with the very pleasant and personable front of the house workers for a few minutes while the food was being prepared.

Elian had a roll whose name I forgot and he ordered gyoza and some shumai, I believe. I didn't try the shumai, but the gyoza was fine.

Overall, my entire time there I felt that the food was good, but it didn't really blow me out of water. The service though I must say was interesting.

The lady we had was like a ninja, disappearing and appearing when needed. Essentially what a server should be - attentive to a customer but not overbearing.

Ultimately, prices are cheap, food is tasty, it is nearby, but who knows when I will return - the entire experience can be summed up as okay.

I hesitate writing this review because I don't want one of my favorite sushi places being swarmed by all of miami but this is easily the freshest most delicious sushi I've ever had.

I've made the mistake of driving there to find closed doors too many times. On Yelp I review exclusively sushi bars. It has been several years since I last visited Matsuri, harder for me to get out these days.

Unfortunately, it was not the experience I've had in past. So much so, that I have to drop it off my top 10 list.

Let me contrast the last two meals. Last time I placed my order directly with the chef, this time the chef would not take my order and insisted that the waitress had to place the order on her app.

When I asked that he choose a selection of sashimi he flat refused to. He said that people don't like what he selects so he wouldn't.

I insisted that would not be the case, but to no avail. In prior dinners, the chef gladly helped guide our meal and recommended options.

I then asked about the fish available. His response was the menu has everything. When I tried to ask about non-standard fare, fluke fin, various Japanese snapper, squid or anything unusual he said "we only have what's on the menu".

Contrasted with my last visit four or five years ago when I didn't even look at the menu nor was concerned what was on it. The result is that the Matsuri has migrated to the middle of the pack.

It still has some strengths, reasonably good fish with a decent price. Decent rice that was still warm when served, good tea.

Yet, the drawbacks present. None of the nigiri sushi had any wasabi placed on it by the chef. And the bar set up doesn't let you see the chef work, which is quite a fun part of the meal for me.

This is still a great neighborhood spot for a decent sushi meal. Went to this place because of the high reviews and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food.

It is definitely hard to find good authentic Japanese food in Miami so I was a little weary going to this place.

I'm half Japanese and grew up around the food so I have pretty high expectations when it comes to Japanese food.

Pros -The menu had an a great assortment. Almost like an izakaya style -Food was high quality, fish was fresh. It took a while to flag her down on multiple occasions.

Dinner here was absolutely phenomenal. I enjoyed every single bite of food and the service was pretty quick. First off, there's tons of parking since it's in a shopping plaza right next to Milam's.

I recommend trying to make a reservation if your group is larger than that. The unfiltered sake was great and a perfect size bottle for 2 people.

It looks small, but the flavor in the tuna was so strong. However, it was nothing compared to how yummy the sushi was.

I had to try the bluefin since there's so many good reviews on it. I've never experienced a fish so fresh that it melts in your mouth.

I ordered 4 pieces for my date and I I also ordered the "presidents office" it was called something like that. It was roll It's 4 pieces of different sushi and they're all so tasty.

Overall, be prepared to spend some money here. This was the freshest fish I've ever eaten - the bluefin was so good I probably could've eaten 50 pieces and had someone roll me out the front door.

This place is a hidden gem! Definitely will be back! One of the best Japanese restaurants in Miami. I was so happy with this experience.

It's really hard to find fresh and tasty sushi in Miami and my yelp community delivered by guiding me here.

Great place to bring a group of people. I had to hunt down my server a couple of times but if was very busy. Did I just experience this or was this one of those anime-themed dreams that allowed me to live this amazing sushi experience that can not possibly be considered real life?

Im the kind of person that won't go to a sushi restaurant if I find out there's a showcased roll that contains cream cheese. I like my Japanese food to be authentic and most importantly fresh.

Do they know that they just served me a slice of heaven and made me raise my standards to levels most places can't cater to?

I hate waiting but I waited for my table because I've been ordering the same sushi order for years now and I order it wherever I go then judge them on their execution.

This place had me almost crying of joy. Legit isn't the word! It's my favorite Japanese appetizer ever when it's available.

Sitting at the bar is what I like to do so don't knock it. Ask for the only unfiltered cold sake because you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Honestly, I can't wait to come back here. Man, I'm ecstatic to have came upon this sushi joint in South Florida.

With some experience in omakase in New York City, I would say Matsuri has outdone some of them, with an extremely affordable price point.

Every single sushi was a winner. Do yourself a favor and order salmon, otoro, scallop, eel, California uni, hamachi.

Matsuri has been around for a very long time I first came here while back in my college days at UM and really enjoyed the traditional Japanese dishes they offer.

So many years later and it's same but with some unique sushi rolls with even funnier names. If you're a true sushi connoisseur then this place should be home for you; not only is the quality of fish extremely high, you can delight on true Bluefin O-Toro any day of the week and not get hammered on price.

To me, that's very important because other sushi restaurants charge an arm and a leg if you want Toro; in fact, what other places do is put "MP" next to the price and then charge whatever they feel is justified at that moment.

That's where you killed on the check. If that isn't a deal in itself, I don't know what is All of it was excellent, the quality you'd expect from Miami's premier sushi destination.

My only complaint is that there was a little too much rice used in the nigiri and it was packed pretty densely but other than that it was all amazing.

The fish was very fresh as you'd expect. A little thin in the portion but it was melt in your mouth deliciousness that can't be duplicated by any other fish.

No need to write it down and then enter it into a POS. Highly recommend this place that continues to set them apart for possibly the best sushi at unbelievably reasonable prices.

Now if they'd only offer some other variations like giant clam or Alaskan king crab legs I'd be dining in heaven.

There's nothing better than a foodie gem hidden in a strip mall. Matsuri is just that. Amazing, fresh sushi, tucked in a tiny space in Red Bird Plaza, and my personal favorite sushi spot in Miami.

I grew up 2 minutes away from Matsuri, so I've been coming here for years, and it has remained consistently good for as long as I can remember.

Yes, sometimes it gets crazy busy so you have to wait 15 minutes or so for a table You can make a reservation, but I've just always come here on a whim.

Here are some of the things I love: Authentic, fresh, delicious sushi! They have these insane sashimi platters, and a wide variety of rolls.

Also, order a Matsuri House Salad to start. No, your server is not going to give you the whole spiel about how the restaurant has been here for years and the fish is super fresh; simply put, they don't have time for that because the restaurant is usually pretty busy.

I also can't promise that your server is going to be overly friendly either, but what I can promise is that you will get what you ordered, you will get it fast, and if you need anything else, your server will be there.

Some games played at New Year's are karuta a card game , hanetsuki similar to badminton , tako age kiteflying , and komamawashi spinning tops.

Also special allowances are given to children, which are called otoshidama. They also decorate their entrances with kagami mochi two mochi rice balls placed one on top of the other, with a tangerine on top , and kadomatsu pine tree decorations.

This is the day when families pray for the happiness and prosperity of their girls and to help ensure that they grow up healthy and beautiful.

The celebration takes place both inside the home and at the seashore. Both parts are meant to ward off evil spirits from girls.

Young girls put on their best kimonos and visit their friends' homes. Various flower festivals are held at Shinto shrines during the month of April.

Excursions and picnics for enjoying flowers, particularly cherry blossoms are also common, as well as many drinking parties often to be seen in and around auspicious parks and buildings.

In some areas the peach blossom, the traditional flower of Japan the Cherry being a symbol from the Edo period symbolising the Samurai culture , is viewed as well though this flowers earlier than the Cherry.

In some places flower viewing parties are held on traditionally fixed dates. This is one of the most popular events during spring.

The subject of flower viewing has long held an important place in literature, dance and the fine arts. Ikebana flower arrangement is also a popular part of Japanese culture and is still practiced by many people today.

Some main things people do during this event are: Families go out during weekends to see the cherry blossoms, and participate in the many festivals and activities.

Hanamatsuri celebrates the birth of the Buddha. Japanese people pour ama-cha a beverage prepared from a variety of hydrangea on small Buddha statues decorated with flowers, as if bathing a newborn baby.

The tradition of bathing the Buddha originated in China and was introduced to Japan where it was first held in Nara in The Star Festival Information: It originated from a Chinese folk legend concerning two stars-the Weaver Star Vega and the Cowherd Star Altair -who were said to be lovers who could meet only once a year on the 7th night of the 7th month provided it didn't rain and flood the Milky Way.

It was named Tanabata after a weaving maiden from a Japanese legend, named Orihime who was believed to make clothes for the gods. People often write wishes and romantic aspirations on long, narrow strips of colored paper and hang them on bamboo branches along with other small ornaments.

One traditional custom to mark the end of the Bon Festival. Small paper lanterns containing a burning flame are either set afloat to a river, lake or sea or they are let go and float away into the night.

Their light is intended to guide the way for deceased family members' spirits. Usually the person who lets the lantern go will write a message on the side.

A Buddhist observance honoring the spirits of ancestors. Among the traditional preparations for the ancestors' return are the cleaning of grave sites.

The welcoming fire mukaebi built on the 13th and the send-off fire okuribi built on the 15th and 16th are intended to guide the ancestor's spirits back to their permanent dwelling place.

The Japanese tradition of going to visit scenic areas where leaves have turned red in the Autumn. The tradition is said to have originated in the Heian era as a cultured pursuit.

The Japanese tradition of buying and eating Pocky sticks. Three- and seven-year-old girls and three- and five-year-old boys are taken to the local shrine to pray for their safe and healthy future.

This festival started because of the belief that children of certain ages were especially prone to bad luck and hence in need of divine protection.

Children are usually dressed in traditional clothing for the occasion and after visiting the shrine many people buy chitose-ame "thousand-year candy" sold at the shrine.

Preparations for seeing in the new year were originally undertaken to greet the toshigami , or deity of the incoming year.

These begin on December 13, when the house was given a thorough cleaning; the date is usually nearer the end of the month now. The house is then decorated in the traditional fashion: A sacred rope of straw shimenawa with dangling white paper strips shide is hung over the front door to prevent evil spirits from entering and to show the presence of the toshigami.

It is also customary to place kadomatsu, an arrangement of tree sprigs, beside the entrance way. A special altar, known as toshidana "year shelf" , is piled high with kagamimochi flat, round rice cakes , sake rice wine , persimmons, and other foods in honor of the toshigami.

A fair is traditionally held in late December at shrines, temples or in local neighborhoods. This is in preparation for the new year holidays.

Decorations and sundry goods are sold at the fair. Originally these year-end fairs provided opportunities for farmers, fisherfolk and mountain dwellers to exchange goods and buy clothes and other necessities for the coming year.

Many people visit Buddhist temples to hear the temple bells rung times at midnight joya no kane. This is to announce the passing of the old year and the coming of the new.

With each ring one desire is dispelled. It is also a custom to eat toshikoshi-soba in the hope that one's family fortunes will extend like the long noodles.
